Almonds: A Source of Nutrients and Health-Promoting Compounds
Nuts are essential in our diet. They provide a good source of protein, fiber, and many micronutrients our body needs to function well. Today, I would like to share a few science-based facts about almonds. I will try to answer these two questions: why you should eat almonds daily and what health benefits you will get from consuming them. Let’s dive in, shall we?
In epidemiological studies, the consumption of almonds has been associated with several therapeutic and protective health benefits. Clinical studies have verified the modulatory effects on serum glucose, lipid, and uric acid levels, the regulatory role on body weight, and protective effects against diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases.
Almonds contain lipids (around 50%), proteins (about 25%), and carbohydrates (about 20%) and have a low moisture content and diverse minor bioactive compounds. The beneficial effects of almond consumption are associated with its composition of macro- and micronutrients. Among the compounds with beneficial properties for health, the lipid profile, predominantly monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA, 60%), followed by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, 30%), fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytosterols, and polyphenols, can be highlighted.
The abundant micronutrient polyphenols play an essential role in protection from chronic degenerative diseases. Indeed, frequent consumption of almonds has been associated with reduced risk of various diseases, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome, owing to their LDL-c-reducing ability. These activities were attributed to the lipid fraction and polyphenolic compounds of almonds. It was also reported that consuming almonds and their skin may improve the intestinal microbiota profile and lead to health benefits.
It’s fascinating how this simple and small piece of nature can help improve your health, right? You can read more here.

How to make almond tomato bread spread: step-by-step
STEP 1:
Chop onion finely and add to a preheated frying pan. Dry fry for a few minutes. Dry frying is an excellent method to let onion soften before adding oil. The process draws out all the moisture, so the final result is browned, super crispy, and tender. After a few minutes, add oil and continue frying.
Dry on a low heat. The longer, the better the taste.
STEP 2:
Add spices (herbal pepper, bullion powder, and salt) and continue final frying for another few minutes. This will create a flavor profile for your almond tomato bread spread. Let this stage go slowly. Fry it on a low heat.
STEP 3:
Add tomato paste and stir. It may be dry now, so add more oil or a splash of water. On low heat, continue frying everything for a few more minutes until all flavors are well combined.
STEP 4: Toasting almonds
This step is optional, however it brings the whole recipe to the next level!
Option 1: In the oven (180 degrees Celcius) on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, roast almonds for 10-15 minutes. Let them cool down completely before blending.
Option 2: On a frying pan (low heat), toast almonds for a few minutes until you smell the nutty aroma, then let them cool down before blending.
Place toasted and cooled almonds in a food processor and blend them until powdered consistency, but before they turn into nut butter).
STEP 5:
To a food processor (with blended almonds), add sauteed onions with spices and tomato paste, together with nutritional yeasts, a splash of hot water, and more spices if needed. Blend until smooth texture.
The consistency will thicken when it’s cooled down, so if you like a more liquid texture, consider adding more hot water or vegetable broth. Remember to taste it and if needed, add more spices.
